Dog Breed Videos - View Videos of Common Dog Breeds

A dog breed is a group of dogs that have very similar or nearly identical characteristics of appearance or behavior or, usually, both, primarily because they come from a select set of ancestors who had the same characteristics. Dogs have been selectively bred for specific characteristics for thousands of years. Initially the selections would have centered on domestication and useful behavior such as hunting ability. Later, dogs were also selected for attractive and distinctive forms, resulting in a vast variety of types.

Newfoundland - Watch a Video About Newfies

The Newfoundland is a large, usually black, breed of dog originally used as a working dog in Newfoundland. They are known for their sweet dispositions. They are very loyal to their families and possess natural water rescue tendencies.

Newfies have a gentle, placid disposition. They are nicknamed the "Gentle Giant" and "Nature's babysitter." Indeed, the official AKC breed description says "Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed." They are protective of children. The Newfoundland is smart and loyal. The breed is easily trained as they are eager to please their masters. They are neither easily frightened nor excitable. Relative to other breeds, Newfoundland puppies, especially older puppies, tend to be calm, but obedience training is a must for these giant dogs. Newfoundlands take up to three years to reach full maturity.

Puppies - Watch a Video About Puppies

Puppies like humans, are highly social animals and this similarity in their overall behavioral pattern accounts for their trainability, playfulness, and ability to fit into human households and social situations.

Spaniels - Watch a Video About Spaniels

Spaniels have the primary purposes of flushing game from dense undergrowth and retrieving game after it has been shot. Different breeds reflect different emphasis on the dogs' uses. At one time, spaniels were subdivided into Land, Field, and Water spaniels, according to the terrain in which they worked best.

Shepherds - Watch a Video About German Shepherds

German Shepherd Dogs are often used as working dogs in many capacities, including search and rescue (SAR) dogs, military dogs, police dogs, or guard dogs. They are also used as assistance dogs, particularly guide dogs. The German Shepherd Dog is a large, strong, handsome-looking dog. The fur is a double-coat and can be either short or long haired. It varies in color, coming in many different shades, mostly cream (tan) and brown, but also solid black or white.

Dogs from working lines have very high energy, and have been bred to have a natural drive for protection, tracking, and obedience. They are bred primarily for consistent temperament, working drive, and intelligence. These dogs can be used as pets, but will be unhappy if not exercised daily or trained to do a job of some sort.

Retrievers - Watch a Video About Retrievers

A retriever is a type of  dog that retrieves game for hunters. Retrievers were bred primarily to retrieve birds or other prey and return them to the hunter without damage. The retriever's willingness to please and trainability have made retrievers such as the Labrador Retriever and Golden Retriever popular as assistance dogs.

The Labrador Retriever, is one of several kinds of retriever, and is the most popular breed of dog in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The Labrador is believed to have originated on the island of Newfoundland, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Labradors are a well-balanced and remarkably versatile breed, adaptable to a wide range of functions as well as making very good pets. They are easily trained and are a very obedient breed. They are loyal companions that share the love you give to them. They are very friendly dogs and are great with children. As a rule they are not excessively prone to territorialism, pining, insecurity, aggression, destructiveness, hypersensitivity, or other difficult traits which manifest in a variety of breeds, and as the name suggests, they are excellent retrievers.

The Golden Retriever is a relatively modern and very popular breed of dog.Golden Retrievers are usually compatible with people and other dogs. It will bark when startled but other than that it makes a poor watchdog due to its friendly nature. Golden Retrievers are particularly valued for their high level of sociability towards people.

Mastiff - Watch a Video About Mastiffs

Mastiffs are powerfully built, with massive bodies, broad skulls and head of generally square appearance. The Mastiff breed is a combination of grandeur, dignity, and courage; calm and affectionate to its master, but capable of guarding. The breed is innately good natured, calm, easygoing, and surprisingly gentle. It is a well-mannered house pet but needs sufficient room to stretch out. Mastiffs are an extremely loyal breed and, though not excessively demonstrative, they are devoted to family and good with children. However, Mastiffs can also be very protective of their owners and must be handled sensibly, since they are exceptionally powerful and can be difficult to control. The expected lifespan of a mastiff is 9 to 11 years.

Poodle - Watch a Video About Poodles

Poodles are known for their ability in the water and as bird hunting skills.

The breed comes in three sizes:
Standard: Over 38 cm (15 in) at the shoulder
Miniature: Over 28 cm (11 in) high, but under 38 cm
Toy: Under 28 cm (11 in) and 10 lb or under

The fur on the poodle's body is naturally curly, often in small tight clumps of small curly ringlets. Hair on the ears can be straight or slightly curly. With brushing, the dog's fur will still retain wavy or curly properties, but will soften and straighten somewhat.

Poodles are generally intelligent, alert, and active. In particular, the Standard variety is quite independent and has a noticeable hunting drive. Even Toys will point birds. Because they are so intelligent, they can become bored easily, and can get quite creative about finding mischief.Poodles are extremely people-oriented dogs and, therefore, are eager to please. They are excellent watchdogs, but unlike some working breeds, don't usually become "one-person" dogs when they are part of a family.

Husky - Watch a Video About Huskies

Husky is a general term for several breeds of dogs used as sled dogs. Because of their strength and stamina, the name "Husky" is popular for products and for sports mascots.

A Siberian Husky is a working dog breed that originated in eastern Siberia, the Siberian Husky is a wolf-like, medium-sized dog, 25 to 55 pounds.Siberians have a thicker coat than other types of huskies, that comes in a variety of colors and patterns, usually with white feet and legs, facial markings, and tail tip.

Popular as family pets and as show dogs due to their striking appearance and gentle temperament, Siberians have certain drawbacks. Huskies can be extremely affectionate, curious, and welcoming to people, which means they rarely hurt humans, making them poor guard dogs. Siberian Huskies can be challenging to train due to their stubborn nature and will generally only perform tasks once they see the point behind it. Proper training requires a lot of persistence and patience on behalf of the trainer.

Collie - Watch a Video About Collies

Collie refers to various breeds of herding dog originating primarily in Scotland. The exact origin of the name is uncertain, although it probably originates that collie was a regional word for "something useful". The fictional Lassie, star of movies, books, and television shows, was a Rough Collie, which helped to popularize Collies in the United States and the United Kingdom.

The highlands of Scotland were the natural home of the Collie, where the sheepdogs had been used for centuries by shepherds, but the modern form of the breed was mostly developed in England in the late 1800s. The modern Collie of both Rough and Smooth varieties are available in four distinct colors. Sable and White dogs are generally the most recognizable, the choice of the Lassie television and movie producers.

Collies are known to be generally sweet and protective. They tend to be easy to train due to a middle level of intelligence and a willingness to please. They are natural herding dogs and need the companionship of a family or other dogs.
