German Shepherd Traits
The German Shepherd dog breed originated in Germany
in the 1800s. German Shepherd’s are also named Alsatian
Wolf, Deutsher Schaferhund and Alastian.
German Shepherd are herding dogs. They were initially
bred to protect flocks of sheep. The German Shepherd
is considered a working dog, known for versatility.
German Shepherds are frequently used as police, military
dogs, search and rescue and seeing eye dogs. German
Shepherds are not easily distracted from tasks. German
Shepherds were even used in WWI and WWII by soldiers
to identify soldiers in debris and trenches.
The German Shepherd has a chiseled strong head, with
medium almond-shaped eyes. German Shepherd has pointed
ears that are carried erect, the German Shepherd has
a sloping back and bushy tail. German Shepherds have
powerful hindquarters and weighs 75-95 lbs and is 23-25
inches tall. Like wolves, German Shepherds have a two
layered coat, they have a thick outer coat that sheds
as well as a protective undercoat. German Shepherds
common colors are tan, or red with black.
German Shepherds are known for their strength, loyalty
, obedience and intelligence. German Shepherds are also
known for their keen sense of smell.The German Shepherd
is an intelligent, versatile breed. The German Shepherd
is often suspicious of strangers, it is protective of
its home and family. German Shepherds can be over protective
of those they deem to be members of their family. The
German Shepherd can be also aggressive toward other
dogs.
The German Shepherd requires daily mental and physical
challenges in order to stay stimulated. German Shepherds
are able to easily memorize simple tasks.
German Shepherds typically live 10-12 years.
