Origins: The first Beagles date
back to the 1500s. English hunters used
packs of beagles to hunt and track rabbits,
hare, pheasant, quail and other small
animals. The word "Beagle" may have come
from the French term "be’geule," which
means “gape throat,” referring to the
dogs unique and distinctive baying voice.
Description: Beagles are small
to medium sized dogs. Beagles have a square,
compact, slender build. Beagles have small
floppy ears and a prominent snubbed nose.
Beagles have a distinctive "bay",
that is a boisterous "howl",
that is specific to the breed.
Size: Beagles weigh between 20-25
lbs, they stand 13 to 15 inches tall.

Coat: Beagles have medium-length,
sleek coats that are tricolour or white
in combination with red, lemon, orange,
or brown.
Disposition: Beagles are sweet
and gentle natured dogs, but their insatiable
curiousity can get them into trouble on
occassion. Beagles are notorious barkers
and can be disruptive in close quarters.

as detection dogs for prohibited agricultural
imports and prohibited items.

requires moderate exercise and may become
distracted and take off after prey if
not leashed. Beagles may not do well with
other small pets, due to their hunting
instincts, and they can become destructive
if left to their own devices.
