The Pug is prone to the following
major health conditions:
Encephalitis - Encephalitis or swelling
in and around the brain.
Canine Hip Dysplasia - Hip dysplasia
is an abnormal formation of the hip socket
that, in its more severe form, can eventually
cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis
of the joints. It is a polygenic trait,
that is affected by environmental factors
in the production of the final phenotype.
It can be found in many animals and occasionally
in humans, but is most commonly associated
with dogs, and is common in many dog breeds,
particularly the larger breeds.
The Pug is prone to the following
minor health conditions:
Elongated Soft Palete - Elongated Soft
Palete is the most common breathing disorder.
The soft palate is the flap of skin at
the back of the throat. If the palate
is too long, it blocks the airway making
it difficult for the dog to breathe.
Stenotic Nares - Stenotic Nares (pinched
nostrils) is a common abnormality found
most commonly in brachycephalic dogs,
which are dogs that have a short wide
head.
Patellar Luxation - Patellar Luxation
is the abnormal shallow groove in the
knee so that the knee cap slips n and
out of the position, causing lameness.
Patellar Luxation is most common in small
dogs.
Legg-Perthes - Legg-Perthes disease is
a disorder of small breeds of dogs. With
this condition, the puppy will grow normally
until about three months of age. At this
time, the ball (femoral head) of the hip
joint begins to degenerate.
Entropion - Entropion is the inversion
of the eyelids, so that they roll inward,
often irritating the eye.
Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS) - Keratoconjunctivitis
Sicca is the decreased tear production
of the eye causing a dry eye and damage
to the cornea.
Hemivertebra - Hemivertebra is a congenital
defect of the spine in which one side
of a vertebra fails to develop completely.
Skin Infections.
The Pug occasionally has problems
with the following health conditions:
Seizures - Seizures manifest as an alteration
in mental state, tonic or clonic movements,
and convulsions.
Nerve Degeneration
Distichiasis - Distichiasis is the abnormal
origin of eyelashes along the lid margin,
often resulting in irritation to they
eye.
Allergies - Allergies are the hypersensitivity
reaction to a particular allergen; symptoms
can vary greatly in intensity. Demodicosis
- Demodicosis is a condition caused the
mite to which certain breeds are more
susceptible.
