About English Cocker Spaniel
Dogs
English Cocker Spaniels, or Cocker
Spaniels in the U.K., comprise a breed of small-sized
spaniel. Their origins are uncertain, but it is
known that the breed existed by the 14th century.
They most likely originated in Spain. The breed's
name derives from the word "Woodcock," a type
of bird that English Cocker Spaniels were initially
used to hunt. Today, they are the second most
popular breed of dog in the U.K.
English Cocker Spaniels are the
smallest member of the sporting group, measuring
15 to 16 inches in height and weighing 28 to 32
pounds. They have a sturdy but compact build,
and an overall balanced appearance. English Cocker
Spaniels have pendant ears, which are characteristically
long, low-set, and floppy. Their overall expression
suggests alertness.
English Cocker Spaniels have silky,
relatively long coats that either lie flat or
are slightly wavy. They may be any color, including
but not limited to black, golden, grey, cream,
tan, brown, and red. English Cocker Spaniels may
be solid or may have a pattern such as parti-coloration
or roan. They may also have other colored markings
on an otherwise solid coat.
English Cocker Spaniels have pleasant
dispositions, being playful, cheerful, amiable
, sweet, and sensitive. They are intelligent,
ready to please, and eager to listen to their
humans, making them quite obedient. They are also
very trainable. English Cocker Spaniels are outgoing,
and tend to be open to strangers. However, they
may be reserved if they are socialized improperly.
English Cocker Spaniels tend to
fare well in most living conditions, making them
well-suited to life in an apartment if they are
adequately exercised. However, they fare best
with at least an average yard at their disposal.
They fare well in most climates. English Cocker
Spaniels are great with children, and often cohabitate
well with other pets, making them great family
dogs. They shed moderately.
English Cocker Spaniels require
regular brushing; it is recommended that they
are groomed two to three times per week in order
to keep their coats healthy. Their ears should
be cleaned often and routinely checked for ticks
and burrs. The hair around an English Cocker Spaniel's
paw pads should be trimmed, but the hair between
their toes should be left alone. They should be
bathed periodically. English Cocker Spaniels must
be walked daily. Their exercise requirement is
flexible, but they are most happy when engaging
in some exercise and play outside of their daily
walk.
English Cocker Spaniels become overweight
easily, and should not be overfed. They are also
prone to ear infections. On average, they live
for 12 to 15 years.
