St Bernard Characteristics
The Saint Bernard originated in Switzerland. The first
Saint Bernard was bred at the Hospice of St Bernard
de Menthon over 1000 years ago. Saint Bernards are also
known as St Bernhardshund and Sacred Dog.
The Saint Bernard was initially bred for search and
rescue. For several hundred years, dogs bred at the
German St Bernard Pass monastery in Switzerland were
trained to rescue lost travelers in the mountains.
The Saint Bernard has a large bone structure, with
a deep chest broad large head, short square muzzle.
Both smooth-haired and rough-haired forms of the St
Bernard exist. The Saint Bernard weighs 110-200 lbs
and is 24-28 inches tall. Female Saint Bernards are
slightly smaller than their male counterparts.
Saint Bernards are gentle and patient especially around
children. They are not overly playful, but they are
devoted and willing to please, however be warned, Saint
Bernards can be stubborn.
Saint Bernard’s need moderate daily exercise to stay
fit and healthy. Saint Bernards have a thick coat and
tolerate the cold weather, but they do not do well in
excessive heat. The Saint Bernard requires weekly brushing,
and more frequent when they are shedding. The Saint
Bernard does not tolerate heat well.
Saint Bernard’s typically have a life span of 8-10
years.
