Intelligent Dog Breeds
Given that it is difficult to measure and rank the
objective intelligence of dog breeds, there is controversy
over which breed is the smartest. Many factors may be
assessed in determining a dog's intelligence; some working
dogs are able to memorize specific tasks, while other
breeds may learn more quickly, but may also become distracted
more easily. In spite of this difficulty, there are
several breeds that are generally held to rank among
the most intelligent dog breeds. Though these breeds
are known to be exceptionally smart, other breeds are,
by no means dumb, and may even be more intelligent than
these dogs; as is true with humans, genetics is not
the only factor that determines intelligence in dogs.
Considering only general rules, however, the following
is a list of ten dogs widely agreed to comprise the
most intelligent breeds.

1. Border Collies
Border collies are famous for their intelligence,
which is manifested in their obedience, quick learning,
and ability to creatively handle problems. Border collies
require significant physical and mental exercise, and
are known to be wonderful pets for many of those who
can provide them with these things.
2. Poodle
Poodles are also known to be very active dogs and
require stimulation to prevent boredom, but are less
notoriously demanding than border collies. They are
relatively easy to train and loyal to their masters.
3. German Shepherd
German shepherds, famously used as various types of
working dogs, are very obedient and loyal to their masters,
but are inclined to become overprotective if they are
not properly trained. They are often more than willing
to work and fulfill a purpose, and are naturally curious.
4. Golden Retriever
Golden retrievers are determined and eager to work,
and they display a remarkable ability to focus. They
rank among the most popular dog breeds, and are well-known
for their friendly demeanor, which extends to strangers;
loyalty; confidence; and being easily pleased.
5. Doberman Pinscher
Doberman pinschers are very obedient and loyal to their
masters. Despite their notoriety for supposedly being
aggressive, many modern Dobermans have been bred to
show weakened aggression, particularly in America, and
some even consider them gentle and friendly.
6. Shetland Sheepdog
Shetland sheepdogs are obedient and eager to please
their masters and take orders. They are very loyal and
affectionate towards familiar people, particularly those
around whom they were raised, but tend to be distant
in interactions with strangers.
7. Labrador Retriever
Labrador retrievers are very even-tempered, and often
serve as working dogs in various fields. They are friendly,
outgoing, enthusiastic, active, and loyal, making them
of the most popular dog breeds.
8. Papillon
Papillons are alert, adventurous, and often athletic
dogs that tend to be easy to train. They are neither
shy nor aggressive and are generally friendly and happy,
despite their reputation for being moody.
9. Rottweiler
Rottweilers are self-assured, brave, obedient, and
loyal. Though they are reputed as being aggressive,
properly socialized rottweilers show only an average
level of aggression; they are generally calm, but can
be quite protective of their homes and masters.
10. Australian Cattle Dog
Australian cattle dogs are active, energetic, and
playful, and thrive when faced with an engaging job.
Though they are cautious and often distant towards strangers,
they are affectionate, friendly, and incredibly loyal
to their masters.
