Bulldog Health Concerns
The Bulldog is prone to the following
major health conditions:
Ventricular Septal Defect - Ventricular
Septal Defect is a defect in the ventricular
septum, the wall dividing the left and
right ventricles of the heart.
Canine Hip Dysplasia - Hip dysplasia
is an abnormal formation of the hip socket
that, in its more severe form, can eventually
cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis
of the joints. It is a polygenic trait,
that is affected by environmental factors
in the production of the final phenotype.
It can be found in many animals and occasionally
in humans, but is most commonly associated
with dogs, and is common in many dog breeds,
particularly the larger breeds.
Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS) - Keratoconjunctivitis
Sicca is the decreased tear production
of the eye causing a dry eye and damage
to the cornea.
Stenotic Nares - Stenotic Nares (pinched
nostrils) is a common abnormality found
most commonly in brachycephalic dogs,
which are dogs that have a short wide
head.
Elongated Soft Palete - Elongated Soft
Palete is the most common breathing disorder.
The soft palate is the flap of skin at
the back of the throat. If the palate
is too long, it blocks the airway making
it difficult for the dog to breathe.
Shoulder Luxation - Shoulder Luxation
is a propensity to should dislocation
when the humerus separates from the scapula
at the glenohumeral joint.
Internalized Tail - Internalized Tail
is also known a corkscrew tail, this condition
is common in Bulldog breeds. The tail
grows inward instead of outward which
typically causes bacterial infections.
The Bulldog is prone to the following
minor health conditions:
Entropion - Entropion is the inversion
of the eyelids, so that they roll inward,
often irritating the eye.
Ectropion - Ectropion is eversion of
the eyelids, so that they roll out from
the eye, leaving a gap between the lid
and the eye.
Distichiasis - Distichiasis is the abnormal
origin of eyelashes along the lid margin,
often resulting in irritation to they
eye.
Canine Hip Dysplasia - Hip dysplasia
is an abnormal formation of the hip socket
that, in its more severe form, can eventually
cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis
of the joints. It is a polygenic trait,
that is affected by environmental factors
in the production of the final phenotype.
It can be found in many animals and occasionally
in humans, but is most commonly associated
with dogs, and is common in many dog breeds,
particularly the larger breeds.
Elbow Dysplasia - Elbow dysplasia is
a condition involving multiple developmental
abnormalities of the elbow-joint in the
dog, specifically the growth of cartilage
or the structures surrounding it. These
abnormalities, known as 'primary lesions',
give rise to osteoarthritic processes.
Cherry Eye - Cherry Eye is when the tear
gland protrudes beyond the "third eyelid",
resulting in bright red bulge in the inner
corner of the eye.
Patellar Luxation - Patellar Luxation
is the abnormal shallow groove in the
knee so that the knee cap slips n and
out of the position, cuasing lameness.
Patellar Luxation is most common in small
dogs.
Demodicosis - Demodicosis is a condition
caused the mite to which certain breeds
are more susceptible.
The Bulldog occasionally has problems
with the following health conditions:
Urethral Prolapse - Urethral Prolapse
is a circular protrusion of the distal
urethra through the external meatus.
Vaginal Hyperplasia - Vaginal Hyperplasia
is when the vaginal tissue becomes overly
enlarged, especially with estrogen stimulation.
