French Bulldog Health Concerns
The French Bulldog is prone to the
following major health conditions:
Brachycephalic Syndrome - Brachycephalic
Syndrome refers to the combination of
elongated soft palate, stenotic nares,
and everted laryngeal saccules, all of
which are commonly seen in these breeds.
Elongated soft palate is a condition where
the soft palate is too long so that the
tip of it protrudes into the airway and
interferes with inspiration of air into
the lungs.
Invertebral Disc Disease - Intervertebral
disc disease is a premature hardening
of the center of the disc, and weakening
of the outer layer of the disc that occurs
in chondrodystrophic dogs such as dachshunds.
As the outer layer of the disc ruptures,
the inner material is displaced upwards
against the spinal cord. This herniated
disc material injures the spinal cord
and results in cord swelling and compression.
Consequentially, the nerves within the
spinal cord traveling to the legs and
urinary bladder become damaged. This in
turn results in loss of limb function
that can range from weakness to paralysis,
and loss of bladder control.
Canine Hip Dysplasia - Hip dysplasia
is an abnormal formation of the hip socket
that, in its more severe form, can eventually
cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis
of the joints. It is a polygenic trait,
that is affected by environmental factors
in the production of the final phenotype.
It can be found in many animals and occasionally
in humans, but is most commonly associated
with dogs, and is common in many dog breeds,
particularly the larger breeds.
Allergies - Allergies are the hypersensitivity
reaction to a particular allergen; symptoms
can vary greatly in intensity.
The French Bulldog is prone to the
following minor health conditions:
Patellar Luxation - Patellar Luxation
is the abnormal shallow groove in the
knee sot hat the knee cap slips n and
out of the position, cuasing lameness.
Patellar Luxation is most common in small
dogs.
Hemivertebra - Hemivertebra is a congenital
defect of the spine in which one side
of a vertebra fails to develop completely.
The French Bulldog occasionally has
problems with the following health conditions:
Distichiasis - Distichiasis is the abnormal
origin of eyelashes along the lid margin,
often resulting in irritation to they
eye.
