Newfoundland Dog Characteristics
The Newfoundland dog breed originated in Canada in
1700s. The Newfoundland’s were initially bred to help
fisherman.
Newfoundland are large docile dogs, that are gentle
and affectionate. The Newfoundland weighs 110-150 lbs
and is 26-28 inches tall. Female Newfoundlands tend
to be smaller than their male counterparts. Newfoundland
dogs are large, heavy boned dogs with a thick double
coat, with an undercoat that is soft and dense and a
long straight outer coat.
The Newfoundland have a thick black fluffy oily coat
that is water-resistant and webbed toes. The Newfoundland
has a large broad head. The Newfoundland is often said
to look like a bear cub. The breed has been used for
water rescue.
The Newfoundland is a giant breed dog. Newfoundlands
are known for their sweet temperament, they are calm,
easy going and gentle. Newfoundlands are friendly to
strangers and other animals. They require moderate exercise
and tend to love to swim. Newfoundlands do not tolerate
hot weather well, but are more comfortable in the cold
weather.
Newfoundland dogs have thick coats require grooming
twice per week, and more frequently when they are shedding.
Newfoundlands are prone to drooling.
The Newfoundlands life span is typically 8-10 years.
