Shar Pei Traits
The Shar Pei originated in China in the 1500s. The
name Shar Pei means sandy coat, referring to gritty
sandpiper texture of the Shar Pei’s coat.
The Shar Pei was originally bred for dog fighting.
Shar Peis have a compact square build, tiny ears that
are close to the head, and a bristly coat with fur standing
straight off the body. The Shar Pei weighs 35-45 lbs
and is 18-20 inches tall. The Shar Pei is known by its
distinctive loose skin covering, that falls in folds
making it have a perpetual frown. The Shar Pei has a
deep broad chest with a broad muzzle and a high curly
tail. The Shar Pei requires very little brushing but
their wrinkles require attention to ensure the at they
don’t develop irritations in the skin folds.
The Shar Pei are serious, independent and stubborn.
Shar Pei’s can be aggressive with other dogs, and may
chase livestock. Shar Peis are typically good with other
family pets, that they are raised with. Shar Peis are
not overly affectionate, but they are devoted to and
protective of their family. Shar Peis are reserved with
strangers. Shar Pei’s require daily mental and physical
stimulation.
The Shar Pei’s typical life span is 8 to 10 years.
