Akita Dog Traits
The Akita was developed in Japan in the
1600s. The Akita was developed to hunt
big game. The Akita is also referred to
as the Akita Inu and the Japanese Akita.
Today Akita’s are used as a guard and
police dog in Japan.
The Akita has a muscular hind quarters,
thick fur, a high set tail and a bear-like
face. The Akita weighs 75-110 lbs and
is 24-28 inches tall. Female Akita’s are
slightly smaller than their male counterparts.
Akita’s have a curly tail.
Akita’s have a double coat, with a dense
undercoat and an outer coat that stands
off the body. Akita’s require weekly grooming,
and regular brushing when shedding.
Akita’s are bold, independent and often
stubborn dogs. Akita’s can be reserved
with with strangers and aggressive with
other dogs.
Akita’s have a typical life span of 10-12
years.
